Bill has chaired many conferences and made numerous presentations. He is also an accomplished after dinner speaker, as one would expect from a former editor of Punch.

Bill trained on the Financial Times and at the age of 25 was appointed City Editor of the Evening Standard. He later became Financial Editor of the Guardian. He originated BBC television's Money Programme which he presented for several years and also presented the prestigious World at One programme for Radio Four.

For most of the 1970's he was editor of Punch; the magazine flourished during his long editorship. In 1973 he also launched High Life, the award winning monthly in-flight magazine of which he is the editor in chief.

In 1990 he was appointed to the part time public sector posts of chairman of the British Tourist Authority and the English Tourist Board. He has also chaired many conferences and award ceremonies and addressed audiences in USA, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Italy, Greece and India.

He is a versatile speaker and can bring a humorous touch to his speeches, one of his favourite after dinner topics being "What We Are Doing to the English Language". Other topics include Towards 2000 (a look at economic and social trends in the next century), Communicopia (the exciting world of communications and how it can help management and the individual), Making It Happen (which deals with the difference between theory and commercial realities - the art of making it happen), The Power of Positive Thinking (a presentation reflecting the author's own experiences and approach to life) and Opportunities in Europe (a positive view of the European Union, an ideal speech for an international audience).

As an experienced television presenter he is also good at handling question and answer sessions which can be accompanied by slides and/or visual material.
