GENERAL PATRICK
CORDINGLEY
DSO
Patrick Cordingley
commanded
the 7th Armoured
Brigade, the
Desert Rats,
which numbered
12,000 during
the Gulf War.
He was awarded
the Distinguished
Service Order
for his leadership
and bravery.
He returned
to England
to set up
the Combined
Arms training
Centre at
Warminster.
He held this
appointment
for only ten
months before
being promoted
to Major General
to command
the newly
formed Eastern
District with
its Headquarters
in York. From
there he controls
60,000 regular
soldiers,
territorials
and cadets
based throughout
the eastern
side of England,
stretching
from the Scottish
Borders to
south of Colchester.
Patrick joined
the Army and
the 5th Inniskilling
Dragoon Guards
in 1965 having
been educated
at Sherborne
in Dorset.
He saw service
in Cyprus,
Libya, Germany
and Canada
before attending
the prestigious
Army Staff
College where
he later returned
as an instructor.
It was during
this period
that his interest
in the Antarctic
became almost
an obsession.
In 1984 he
went there
as a member
of a small
expedition
and has written
and lectured
on the subject
ever since.
Following
the Gulf War
and the high
public profile
enjoyed by
the Desert
Rats, Major
General Cordingley
has been greatly
in demand
as a speaker
and lecturer
both in the
UK and overseas
He speaks
on a range
of subjects,
which include,
leadership
during periods
of tension,
high intensity
conflict,
decision making
and team briefing.
Patrick Cordingley
is married
and has two
daughters.
Apart from
the Antarctic,
he is interested
in military
history and
what he would
describe as
minor sports;
windsurfing,
tennis, skiing
and horse
riding.
