Norman Phillips Organisation MAJOR GENERAL PATRICK CORDINGLEY DSO Biography

MAJOR GENERAL PATRICK CORDINGLEY DSO

MAJOR GENERAL PATRICK CORDINGLEY DSO

Patrick Cordingley commanded the 7th Armoured Brigade, the Desert Rats, which numbered 12,000 during the Gulf War.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his leadership and bravery.

He returned to England to set up the Combined Arms training Centre at Warminster. He held this appointment for only ten months before being promoted to Major General to command the newly formed Eastern District with its Headquarters in York. From there he controls 60,000 regular soldiers, territorials and cadets based throughout the eastern side of England, stretching from the Scottish Borders to south of Colchester.

Patrick joined the Army and the 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards in 1965 having been educated at Sherborne in Dorset. He saw service in Cyprus, Libya, Germany and Canada before attending the prestigious Army Staff College where he later returned as an instructor. It was during this period that his interest in the Antarctic became almost an obsession. In 1984 he went there as a member of a small expedition and has written and lectured on the subject ever since.

Following the Gulf War and the high public profile enjoyed by the Desert Rats, Major General Cordingley has been greatly in demand as a speaker and lecturer both in the UK and overseas

He speaks on a range of subjects, which include, leadership during periods of tension, high intensity conflict, decision making and team briefing.

Patrick Cordingley is married and has two daughters. Apart from the Antarctic, he is interested in military history and what he would describe as minor sports; windsurfing, tennis, skiing and horse riding.
