Daley Thompson
has more decathlon
honors than
anybody has
ever had,
and being
the first
person ever
to hold the
World, Commonwealth,
European and
Olympic titles
at the same
time. He had
an unbeaten
competition
record for
a total of
9 years.
Throughout
the 80’s
he was unquestionably
the world’s
greatest decathlon
athlete and
he managed
to win and
amazing 19
decathlons,
12 of them
being consecutive.
At the Moscow
Olympics in
1980 he won
a gold medal
when he proved
to be the
master of
the decathlon
at the age
of 21. He
then went
on to Win
a Gold Medal
in the Los
Angeles Olympics
in 1984, breaking
the World
Record with
8,847 points
at the same
time.
Daley was
awarded an
MBE in 1982
and then an
OBE in 1986,
advancing
to CBE in
2000. He was
also voted
BBC Sports
Personality
of theYear
in 1982, followed
by Britain’s
Athlete of
the Century
in 1999.
He retired
from athletics
in 1992, due
to any injury
and went on
to play football
for Mansfield
Town and Wimbledon.
